Portuguese coach Pepa, who was officially introduced as the new head coach of Sport Recife on Wednesday (Sept 4), shared his thoughts on the warm reception he’s received from Cruzeiro fans on social media. Even though he’s not very active on social platforms, Pepa was moved by the love and support he received from Cruzeiro fans despite leaving the club. During his time with Cruzeiro in 2023, he led the team in 25 games, achieving 7 victories, along with several draws and 10 losses.
Pepa, who tries to stay away from social media, acknowledged the recognition from the Cruzeiro supporters, calling it a sign of respect. His main focus now, however, is on his new challenge with Sport Recife, as they compete for a top-four finish in Série B. “I’m not very focused on social media, but it’s a sign of respect. My only focus now is on the next three months of Série B,” Pepa said.
The Cruzeiro Experience and Growth
Pepa also highlighted how his time with Cruzeiro has helped him grow as a coach. This experience in Brazilian football has better prepared him for his current job with Sport Recife. “After my first experience in Brazil, I feel much more prepared. The language may be the same, but the culture is very different. I’m returning to a country where I truly enjoyed working,” Pepa explained.
His contract with Sport Recife runs until the end of the current season, with an automatic renewal if the team achieves promotion to Série A. Pepa will work alongside his trusted coaching team, including assistants Nuno Correia, Hugo Silva, physical trainer Pedro Oliveira, and analyst Pedro Azevedo.
Sport Recife’s Current Situation
Sport Recife is currently in seventh place in the Série B standings, with 35 points. They are just four points behind Vila Nova, the team occupying the fourth spot in the coveted G4, which would secure promotion to Série A. Pepa’s task is clear: push the team into the top four and secure promotion.
Pepa’s First Game with Sport
Pepa’s first game as Sport Recife’s coach is set for this Saturday (Sept 7) at 7 p.m. (Brasília time). They will face Avaí in Florianópolis for the 25th round of Série B. Pepa is awaiting final clearance from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to be officially listed as the coach, which is expected to happen soon.
