Notre Dame, ranked No. 5 in the nation, faced Northern Illinois in their Week 2 college football game. Most people expected Notre Dame to win easily; they were favored to win by 28.5 points. Coming off a season-opening victory over Texas A&M, a big win seemed likely for the Fighting Irish.
But Northern Illinois had other plans. In a surprising turn of events, the Huskies defeated Notre Dame 16-14. The game was decided by a field goal from Kanon Woodill with just 31 seconds left on the clock. This last-minute score secured the upset victory for Northern Illinois.
This win was impressive not only because of the rankings but also because a team from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) beat one of college football’s traditional powerhouses. However, in terms of point spread upsets, this game doesn’t rank in the top 10 biggest of all time. It does, however, make it into the top 15 biggest upsets in the past 45 years.
Other teams that have won as 28.5-point underdogs include:
- Illinois over Wisconsin in 2019
- Pitt over West Virginia in 2007
- Nicholls State over Western Michigan in 2013
While some of these games were between conference rivals, Nicholls State’s victory is notable because an FCS team from the Southland Conference beat a MAC program.

The biggest point-spread upset in college football history happened in 2017 when Howard beat UNLV 43-40 as a 45.5-point underdog. Other major upsets include:
- Stanford defeating USC 24-23 in 2007 as 40.5-point underdogs
- Syracuse beating Louisville in 2007 as 36.5-point underdogs
- Texas State defeating Houston in 2012 as 36.5-point underdogs
Even though Notre Dame’s loss to Northern Illinois isn’t the biggest upset ever, it’s still a significant and surprising defeat. For Notre Dame fans, it might be some comfort to know there have been even bigger upsets in college football history.
