Tragedy at Apalachee High: A Community Shattered by Unimaginable Violence

On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday morning in Winder, Georgia, the tight-knit community surrounding Apalachee High School was rocked by an unthinkable tragedy. The day started like any other, but it would soon become the deadliest school shooting in the U.S. since March 2023. Four people – two students and two teachers – lost their lives, and nine others were injured. The alleged shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, is now facing multiple murder charges and will be tried as an adult.

A Mother’s Plea

Armed with an AR-style rifle, authorities say he opened fire on his classmates and teachers, killing four people and injuring several others. Police were notified of the shooting at 10:20 a.m., a mere 30 minutes after his mother’s desperate call to the school.

As more information has surfaced, it’s become clear that this was not an isolated incident of concern. In May 2023, Colt had been questioned by law enforcement about online threats involving a school shooting. According to a joint statement from the FBI and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Colt had posted disturbing messages and photos of guns. Despite being injured by one of the bullets, Ronaldo jumped up and closed the classroom door, preventing Colt from reentering and potentially saving his classmates’ lives. Only after securing the door did Ronaldo notice the blood and realize he had been shot.

A Heroic Teacher’s Last Moments

Perhaps the most heartbreaking moment of the day occurred in Richard Aspinwall’s classroom. A well-loved math teacher and assistant football coach, Aspinwall was known for his warm personality and dedication to his students. On that fateful day, he heard the commotion in the hallway and stepped out to investigate. It was a decision that would cost him his life.

As soon as he entered the hallway, Colt fired at him, striking him in the chest. Despite his injury, Aspinwall managed to stumble back into his classroom, clutching his chest as his horrified students watched. “We had to watch our teacher come back in the classroom holding himself like he’s been shot, and fell to the floor,” recalled Malasia Mitchell, a 17-year-old student. The students sprang into action, pulling their teacher into the room and using their shirts to try and stop the bleeding. They barricaded the door with desks and chairs, trying to protect themselves as they fought to save Aspinwall’s life.

Despite their efforts, Aspinwall died in front of his students. His bravery, however, did not go unnoticed. “If he didn’t walk out and take the bullet … who knows what would’ve happened,” said Julie Woodson, a family friend. Aspinwall is now being remembered as a hero who gave his life to protect his students.

As the community tries to come to terms with the tragedy, more questions have emerged about the events leading up to the shooting. Authorities have confirmed that the AR-style rifle used in the attack was a gift from Colt’s father, Colin Gray. According to law enforcement, Colin had purchased the weapon as a holiday present for his son in December 2023, just months after authorities had questioned Colt about the online threats.

Colin Gray is now facing charges of his own. Prosecutors have charged him with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and both he and his son remain in custody.

A recovery center has been set up in Barrow County to offer financial assistance, legal services, and mental health care to survivors and their families.
