A pair from Rajasthan was detained at Ahmedabad airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle two high-end watches value roughly Rs 13 crore from Dubai on Friday, officers within the Customs Department stated on Sunday.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Richard Mille watches, largely noticed on the wrists of billionaires or celebrities, had been seized from the person and the lady, who arrived individually at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport from Dubai.
According to the officers, one in all them noticed the lady with one of many watches on her arrival from Dubai. Upon interrogation, she stated it was gifted by her husband. When she was requested about her husband’s whereabouts, she stated he was arriving on one other flight.
The girl’s husband, the officers stated, was caught when he was attempting to exit the airport on his arrival. He initially claimed that the watch belonged to him and that it value round Rs 1,000. When he was requested to supply a invoice, he stated he didn’t have one.
As authorities searched his belongings, they discovered the case for the watch. The man then admitted to smuggling the merchandise, the officers stated.
The couple was subsequently detained and upon interrogation, stated they belong to Pratapgarh in Rajasthan. They stated they had been made to journey to Dubai to convey the watches to Ahmedabad, the officers added.
The officers stated an in depth probe is underway.
