Listeria Outbreak, 9 Dead eating Boar Meat products in U.S.

At least nine people have died after being infected with listeria (a type of bacteria typically found in animal products including diary, meat and vegetables), from eating Boar’s Head deli meats. It can cause a serious infection known as listeriosis, the infection is typically caused by consuming contaminated food, especially unpasteurized dairy products, deli meats, and certain types of produce.

The first case was reported in May and since then there are additional cases which continue to report until August. The agency said, this is the largest outbreak reported in the U.S. Since 2011, Boar’s Head has been recalled more than 7 million products of deli products.

The infections are caused by a bacterium which can survive in extreme temperature and can thrive during refrigeration. Around, 1,600 people get listeria food poisoning each year, still about 260 die, according to CDC latest report.

Listeria infections are hard to pinpoint as symptoms may vary quickly, it takes 8-10 weeks after being contaminated with deli food.

The Health Department discovered after a Boar’s Head sample was collected in Maryland tested positive for listeria. Additional testing revealed that the type of bacteria was the same causing illness in people.

The health department, has recalled all deli meats products from the stores and are no longer available in the market, Boars Head official said on their websites. The products were distributed to stores nationwide.

Several illnesses caused by food poisoning are short lived but listeria infections can have serious effects. A new case of death was reported from Newport died on July 18 due to brain infections caused by listeria bacteria, an illness that was confirmed to be linked to the contaminated Boar’s Head products.
