Frances Tiafoe had a dramatic and thrilling victory at the US Open on Friday afternoon in New York. In a heated third-round match, Tiafoe defeated Ben Shelton in five sets with scores of 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3, after four hours and three minutes of intense play at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The match, which featured impressive performances from both players, ended with Tiafoe expressing his triumph by pointing to the court and loudly declaring, “This is my house” after shaking hands with Shelton. The match’s excitement delayed the start of the evening session, which was supposed to feature defending champion Novak Djokovic against Montreal champion Alexei Popyrin. Tiafoe will now face the winner of that match in the fourth round.
Tiafoe praised Shelton’s abilities, noting, “Ben is indeed an incredible player. He goes for all kinds of shots and has great ability and energy out here. It’s really annoying how good he is!” Despite Shelton’s impressive serve and energetic play, Tiafoe managed to handle Shelton’s powerful shots effectively and had a more successful day on serve. Shelton hit 23 aces, but Tiafoe created 21 break points compared to Shelton’s seven.
Tiafoe’s ability to overcome setbacks was key to his victory. In the second set, he had three chances to break Shelton’s serve but missed them. He eventually managed to break Shelton’s serve and win the set. In the third set, Shelton won the tie-break 6-0, but Tiafoe fought back and won the fourth and fifth sets with crucial breaks of serve.
This win marks Tiafoe’s fifth victory in his last six matches against Top 20 opponents. His only recent loss was to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 final. Tiafoe will be aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the third year in a row at the US Open, where he previously made it to his only major semi-final in 2022.
