Boston College Upsets No. 10 Florida St. in O'Brien's Debut

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a stunning start to the Bill O’Brien era, Boston College secured a 28-13 victory over No. 10 Florida State on Monday night, marking their first win against a top-10 team in a decade. O’Brien, in his debut, became the fifth consecutive Boston College head coach to win his first game at the helm.

Boston College’s Offensive Dominance

Quarterback Thomas Castellanos was the star of the night, completing 10 of 16 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 73 rushing yards on 14 carries, including a touchdown. The Eagles dominated the ground game, amassing 263 rushing yards, with Kye Robichaux leading the way with 85 yards on 19 carries. Treshaun Ward also contributed significantly, rushing for 77 yards on 12 carries and catching three passes for 61 yards, including a touchdown.

The Eagles’ first touchdown came early in the second quarter after two punts from both teams. Boston College engineered a meticulous 14-play, 71-yard drive that consumed over nine minutes, culminating in a four-yard touchdown run by Castellanos. This gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

On their next possession, Boston College’s defense forced Florida State into a quick three-and-out. Seizing the momentum, the Eagles offense struck again, with Castellanos connecting with Ward on a 13-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 14-0. Earlier in the drive, the pair had linked up on a 41-yard play that set the stage for the score.

Florida State’s Struggles

Florida State managed to get on the scoreboard after gaining possession on a short field. However, the Eagles’ defense held firm, limiting the Seminoles to just a field goal. A sack by Donovan Ezeiruaku and a crucial pass breakup by Kam Arnold prevented a potential touchdown, making the score 14-3.

Just before halftime, Florida State added another field goal, narrowing the deficit to 14-6 at the break.

Boston College Seals the Victory

In the second half, Boston College’s defense continued to shine. Max Tucker intercepted a fourth-down pass from Florida State’s DJ Uiagalelei and returned it 57 yards deep into Seminoles’ territory. Two plays later, Castellanos found Robichaux for a four-yard touchdown pass, increasing the Eagles’ lead to 21-6 with just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter.

Florida State responded with their first touchdown of the night, cutting Boston College’s lead to 21-13 with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter. However, the Eagles remained resolute. They embarked on an eight-play, 60-yard drive, dominated by their rushing attack, which ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Robichaux. This gave Boston College a comfortable 28-13 lead heading into the final quarter.

With time running out, Boston College advanced to Florida State’s four-yard line but chose to kneel and run down the clock, securing their victory.

The win snapped a 12-game losing streak against top-10 opponents for Boston College, with their last victory coming against No. 9 USC in September 2014. This triumph has set a positive tone for the O’Brien era, and the team looks forward to building on this success.

Boston College will return to Alumni Stadium on Saturday, September 7, for their home opener against Duquesne. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
