PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Gunmen opened hearth on passenger autos in a tribal space in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing no less than 38 individuals and wounding 29, the chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, mentioned.
Among the fatalities within the assault, which occurred within the Kurram tribal district, had been a girl and a baby, Chaudhry mentioned, including: “It’s a serious tragedy and demise toll is more likely to rise.”
Tensions have existed for many years between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute within the tribal space that borders Afghanistan.
No group claimed accountability for the incident.
“There had been two convoys of passenger autos, one carrying passengers from Peshawar to Parachinar and one other from Parachinar to Peshawar, when armed males opened hearth on them,” a neighborhood resident of Parachinar, Ziarat Hussain, instructed Reuters by phone, including that his family had been touring from Peshawar within the convoy.
President Asif Ali Zardari, in a press release, strongly condemned the assault on passenger autos.
