Israeli forces ended a nine-day military operation in the Palestinian city of Jenin on Friday, leaving behind widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. This was one of the largest military actions in the West Bank in recent months.
The Israeli military’s operation involved hundreds of troops, armored vehicles, and heavy equipment, including bulldozers. The operation targeted not just Jenin but also surrounding areas, displacing thousands of residents from their homes. Troops engaged in ongoing battles with Palestinian fighters from various factions, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Fatah.
A Jenin resident, Samaher Abu Nassa, described the situation, stating that the Israeli forces destroyed nearly everything in their path.
The operation caused severe damage to roads, buildings, and essential services. Israeli bulldozers tore up about 20 kilometers of road, leaving many areas without electricity and water. The military stated that they destroyed 30 explosives hidden under the roads. However, the Palestinian foreign ministry accused Israel of using the same destructive tactics in the West Bank as it has in the Gaza Strip.
Thousands of people were forced to flee from their homes during the fighting, while others had to deal with demolished infrastructure once the forces left.
The Israeli military said the goal of the operation was to disrupt militant groups in the area, particularly those backed by Iran, who were reportedly planning attacks on Israeli civilians. During the operation, 14 Palestinian fighters were killed, including a Hamas commander, and 30 suspects were arrested. The military also discovered and dismantled an underground weapons storage facility and an explosives workshop.
In total, 21 people were killed in Jenin during the operation. While many were members of armed factions, there were also civilians among the dead, including a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly shot by a sniper while looking out of a window.

Growing Violence in the West Bank
The West Bank has experienced an increase in violence in recent months. In addition to clashes between the military and Palestinian fighters, there have been attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinian villages and retaliatory attacks by Palestinians.
According to the Palestinian health ministry, more than 680 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem over the past year, with some being armed fighters and others, like children or civilians, being caught in the conflict. Meanwhile, dozens of Israeli civilians have died in Palestinian attacks or in missile strikes launched by Hezbollah from southern Lebanon.
This latest military action highlights the ongoing tension and violence between Israelis and Palestinians, particularly in regions like Jenin where militant groups are active.
