WASHINGTON — Labor Day, a federal holiday that honors the American labor movement and the achievements of the U.S. workforce, is upon us once again. Celebrated on the first Monday of September, Labor Day traditionally marks the end of summer, as if pumpkin spice lattes and back-to-school shopping haven’t already set the tone. Unlike Thanksgiving and Christmas, most national retailers will remain open on Labor Day.

While most stores will keep their doors open on Monday, September 2, there are a handful that will be closed. If you plan to visit stores on Monday, make sure to check your local store’s hours first, as some may be operating on different holiday schedules.
Labor Day 2024: What Will Be Open?
- Grocery Stores: Most grocery stores will be open on Labor Day, but be sure to check with local stores to see if they have special hours.
- Post Office: As with all federal holidays, the United States Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day this year. Post offices nationwide will be closed during the holiday, and mail delivery will be suspended.
- Stock Market: The New York Stock Exchange adheres to U.S. holidays, so the stock market will be closed on Labor Day.
- Government Offices: State, local, and federal offices are closed on Labor Day.
- UPS Deliveries: UPS stores are closed on Labor Day, as are other federal holidays, and there will be no UPS pickup or delivery service on that day.
