Nebraska Dominates Colorado in 28-10 Victory: A Tale of Redemption and Struggles

Nebraska dominated Colorado from the start, showing just how much the Buffaloes still struggle with the same issues from last year. In a lopsided game, Nebraska took control early and cruised to a 28-10 victory, leaving Colorado with many questions to answer.

The Cornhuskers came out strong and jumped to a 28-0 lead by halftime. Nebraska’s offense moved easily, with two touchdown drives spanning over 70 yards. The defense also made a statement when Tommi Hill intercepted Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and returned it for a 7-yard pick-six, adding to Colorado’s misery.

One of the highlights of the game came when Nebraska running back Rahmir Johnson scored a wild touchdown. A pass intended for him was tipped by Colorado linebacker LaVonta Bentley, but Johnson kept his focus, made the catch, and completed the score.

On the other side, Colorado’s offense couldn’t get anything going. The running game was nonexistent, with the team finishing the first half with minus-17 rushing yards. Shedeur Sanders, who was sacked more than 50 times last season, found himself under constant pressure once again. In the first half alone, he was sacked four times and repeatedly hit by Nebraska defenders. By halftime, his brother, Shilo Sanders, was in the locker room with a suspected broken forearm, adding to Colorado’s troubles.

The second half wasn’t much better for Colorado. Even though their defense showed improvement, especially after key players like Trevor Woods were ejected for targeting and Chidozie Nwankwo left with a forearm injury, the offense remained one-dimensional. They relied heavily on Shedeur Sanders’ ability to make plays, but without a solid offensive line and a reliable running game, it was an uphill battle. Colorado finished the game with just 16 rushing yards and 244 passing yards, struggling to generate any rhythm.

Nebraska’s win showed just how far Matt Rhule’s team has come. After years of disappointment, the Cornhuskers looked poised to break an eight-season bowl drought. The team hasn’t won more than five games in a season since 2016, but with this victory, fans are hopeful this year will be different. Matt Rhule’s track record speaks for itself—his teams tend to make big improvements in their second year. Both Temple and Baylor saw major jumps in their performance under Rhule, and Nebraska could be on the same path. While an 11-win season might be a bit too much to expect, the optimism is understandable after such a commanding win.

Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola showed flashes of brilliance, especially in the first half. Though he wasn’t as sharp in the second, he’s demonstrated why he was such a highly recruited player. As Nebraska moves into conference play, growing pains are expected, but the team’s future looks promising.

For Colorado, the loss raised many concerns. After an offseason spent adding new players and coaching staff, the Buffaloes looked eerily similar to the team that struggled in 2023. While the defense had its moments, especially in the second half, the offense remains too dependent on Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. Sanders even had to leave the game after taking a hard hit to the head late in the fourth quarter, raising more worries about the team’s ability to protect its star quarterback.

If Colorado can’t fix its offensive line issues, it could be another long season. Despite adding several new players and bringing in a new offensive line coach, the line continues to struggle. Nebraska’s defensive line consistently overpowered Colorado’s blockers, making it nearly impossible for the Buffaloes to establish any sort of run game. Without balance on offense, Colorado’s chances of becoming bowl-eligible seem slim, especially with tough competition in the Big 12.

In the end, Nebraska came out of this game looking like a team on the rise, while Colorado left with more questions than answers. For the Buffaloes, figuring out their offensive line issues will be key if they hope to turn things around this season. But for Nebraska, this game could be the start of a season full of promise and redemption.
