U.S Open 2024 – Alexei Popyrin Stuns Novak Djokovic with Stunning Victory

A thrilling win by Alexei Popyrin when he takes down Novak Djokovic in four sets 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at the U.S. Open. Australian Alexei Popyrin pulled off a big upset by defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at the US Open on Friday night, hitting 49 winners. Djokovic made things harder for himself by serving a career-high 14 double faults in the match, including four in one game that gave Popyrin a crucial double break at 5-2 in the fourth set. Even though Popyrin was broken when he first tried to serve for the match, he managed to finish it two games later.

This was the second major shock in a row on Arthur Ashe Stadium, after World No. 74 Botic van de Zandschulp defeated 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets the day before.

With this win, Popyrin has achieved the biggest victory of his career, stopping Djokovic from winning his 25th Grand Slam title and 100th career title. Popyrin had previously faced Djokovic three times and lost each match.

August has been a standout month for the 25-year-old Aussie, who also won the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal earlier this month and climbed to a career-high No. 23 in the rankings.

Djokovic has not finished a season without a Grand Slam win since 2017, and this is the first year since 2002 that none of the Big Three (Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal) have won a major.

Popyrin will now face home favorite No. 20 Frances Tiafoe in his first fourth-round appearance at the US Open. This will be their first match against each other. Tiafoe won his match earlier on Friday against No. 13 Ben Shelton, with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3.
